A collection of talks by Swami Vivekananda on the aspects of Vedanta that are for the Westerner both practical and applicable to us in our daily lives. Religion must be rational and reasonable.Excerpt:The ideal of faith in ourselves is of the greatest help. If this faith had been more extensively taught and practiced, I am sure a very large portion of the evils and miseries that we have would have vanished. Throughout history, if any motive power has been more potent than another in the lives of great men and women, it is that of faith in themselves.

Raja Yoga or Conquering the Internal Nature
$6.00 Add to cartRaja Yoga or Conquering the Internal Nature
This book is about the practice of Raja Yoga. The method has been called the soul of all the yogas. The emphsis here in on the control of the mind through concentration and meditation. Raja yoga is also called the yoga of meditation. It is regarded as the psychological way to union with God. Rousing the Kundalini is the one and only way to attain Divine Wisdom. The rousing may come in various ways: through love for God, through the mercy of perfected sages, or through the power of the analytic will of the philosopher. Wherever there was any manifestation of what is ordinarily called supernatural power or wisdom, there a little current of Kundalini must have found its way into the Sushumna. Only, in the vast majority of such cases, the people had ignorantly stumbled on some practice which set free a minute portion of the coiled-up Kundalini. All worship, consciously or unconsciously, leads to this end. The man who thinks that he is receiving response to his prayers does not know that the fulfillment comes from his own nature, that he has succeeded by the mental attitude of prayer in waking up a bit of this infinite power which is coiled up within himself. Thus, what people ignorantly worship under various names, through fear and tribulation, the Yogi declares to the world to be the real power coiled up in every being, the Mother of eternal happiness, if we but know how to approach her. And Raja Yoga is the science of religion, the rationale of all worship, all prayers, forms, ceremonies, and miracles.

Ramakrishna and His Message

Swami Vivekananda was the foremost among the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna, and what he said about his Master is therefore of great importance. Swami Vivekananda’s memories and reflections of his teacher are scattered throughout the nine volumes of The Complete Works (8175054115), but the need to present these thoughts in one concise source was strongly felt. Hence this compact, but valuable book.

The first meeting of Sri Ramakrishna and Narendranath Datta in 1981 was an auspicious event in the history of religion. It is hard to say when Naren actually accepted Sri Ramakrishna as his guru, but as far as the master was concerned, the spiritual relationship was established at this first meeting at Dakshineswar, when he had touched Naren, stirring him to his inner depths. From that moment he had implicit faith in the disciple and bore him a great love.. There is hardly anything more fascinating in religious annals than the coming together of Master and Disciple. The book explores the divine relationship that existed between Sri Ramakrishna and Narendranath Dutta, who, in the fullness of time, became Swami Vivekananda.. Translated from the Bengali, Ramakrishna’s Naren and Naren’s Ramakrishna was originally serialized in the January through June 1978 issues of Prabuddha Bharata.

This book incorporates some of the practical lectures on devotion delivered by Swami Vivekananda. Here he discusses the preparatory disciplines, the importance of the guru and how to choose one, the principles of ritual worship, the chosen ideal, and finally, the supreme love. This book differs from the Swami’s Bhakti Yoga lectures, not in subject matter, but in his treatment of the subject here in an intensive, yet more easily appreciable form.
