QUOTE OF THE MONTH

YEAR 2003

January

O mind, why do you weep?  You are truly the Atman.  Be one with It.  Drink, O my dear, the supreme nectar of the boundless ocean of non-dual Brahman.

In the Atman there is neither knowledge nor ignorance nor the combination of the two.  He who always has this knowledge becomes knowledge Itself and nothing else.

Self-knowledge does not depend upon reasoning or the practice of meditation or the instruction of a teacher or anything in space and time. I am by nature that absolute Knowledge, the Reality which is innate, eternal, and boundless as space.

I was never born and I will never die.  Nor do I perform any action – good or bad.  I am that pure, attributeless Brahman.

Can this finite mind comprehend the infinite God?  He is beyond the mind and the intellect.  The creation which you see in front of you is the kingdom of the mind, and the mind is its ruler as well as its creator.  The mind cannot go beyond its own creation.  Through the practice of spiritual disciplines, though, the subtle mind evolves.  That mind is latent in every human being in a subtle seed form.  When it is developed through sadhana, one experiences many subtle truths.  This, however, is not the final experience.  The subtle mind leads an aspirant closer to the Supreme Self, or Brahman, but it cannot reach there.  In this stage an aspirant does not relish worldly enjoyments.  He longs only to be absorbed in the thought of God.

The next stage is samadhi, which cannot be described.  It is beyond “yea” and “nay”.  In samadhi there is neither happiness nor misery, neither joy nor pain, neither light nor darkness.  Human language is inadequate for expressing that blessed and sublime state.

March

Though I am unborn, of changeless nature and Lord of beings, yet subjugating my nature (Prakrti), I come into being by My own power of delusion (Maya).

Whenever there is a decline of righteousness (Dharma), and rise of unrighteousness (Adharma), then I body Myself forth.

For the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of righteousness (Dharma), I come into being in every age.

He who thus knows in true light my divine birth and action, leaving the body, is not born again:  he attains to Me.

Freed from attachment, fear, and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained My Being.

 Bhagavad Gita

April

If thou speakest not I will fill my heart with thy silence and endure it. I will keep still and wait like the night with starry vigil and its head bent low with patience.

The morning will surely come, and darkness will vanish, and thy voice pour down in golden streams breaking through the sky.

Then thy words will take wing in songs from every one of my birds’ nests, and thy melodies will break forth in flowers in all my forest groves.

Rabindranath Tagore

May

Whatsoever is originated will be dissolved again.  All worry about the self is vain; the ego is like mirage, and all the tribulations that touch it will pass away.  They will vanish like a nightmare when the sleeper awakes.

He who has awakened is free from fear; he has become Buddha; he knows the vanity of all his cares, his ambitions, and also of his pains.

Happy is he who has overcome all selfishness, happy is he who has attained peace, and happy is he who has found the truth.

Truth is noble and sweet; truth can deliver you from evil.  There is no savior in the world except truth.

Have confidence in truth, although you may not be able to comprehend it, although you may suppose its sweetness to be bitter, although you may shrink from it at first.  Trust in truth.

Buddha

June

Through the company of the good, there arises non-attachment; through non-attachment, there arises freedom from delusion; through delusionlessness, there arises steadfastness; through steadfastness, there arises liberation in life.

Do not be proud of wealth, kindred, and youth.  Time takes away all these in a moment.  Leaving aside the entire world, which is of the nature of an illusion, and knowing the state of Brahman, enter into it.

The regulation of breath, the withdrawal of the senses, the inquiry consisting in the discrimination between the eternal and the non-eternal, the method of mind-control associated with the muttering of mantras – perform these with great care.

Being devoted completely to the lotus-feet of the Master, become released soon from the transmigratory process.  Thus, through the discipline of sense and mind control, you will behold the Deity that resides in your heart.

Shankara

4th July

Be humbler than a blade of grass,

Be patient and forbearing as a tree.

Respect and serve others,

Without claiming consideration for yourself.

That is the way to serve and please the Lord.

 Sri Chaitanya

September

He who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings, he never turns away from it (the Self).

He who perceives all beings in the Self, for him how can there be delusion or grief, when he sees this oneness (everywhere)?

The Self is all-encircling, resplendent, bodiless, spotless, without sinews, pure, untouched by sin, all-seeing, all-knowing, transcendent, self-existent; He has disposed all things duly for eternal years.

Isa Upanishad

October

There are four universal principles of Yoga and Vedanta: divinity of the individual soul, unity of existence, oneness of the ultimate reality, and harmony of religions.  Divinity of the soul is the unshakeable spiritual basis of freedom and self-fulfillment.  The unity of existence is the foundation of all ethical virtues.  Self-love is the mainspring of a man’s action and the raison d’ être of his love for others.  But Yoga and Vedanta remind us that the true self of a person is the self of all beings.  While the Ultimate Reality is one, the names, forms, and symbols describing It are various.  They are frail attempts of the human mind to name the nameless and to attribute form to that which is formless.  Oneness of the Ultimate Reality teaches us to remain loyal to our own ideal, but to show positive respect to the ideals of others.  All religions are fundamentally the same.  Unity in diversity is the law of life and so it is in matters of religion.  Different seekers following different paths are all trying to reach the same goal.

November

The Lord is always present in the heart;  we must keep our attention on him.  God is the Soul of our souls, the Life of our lives;  it is through his grace that we are alive and functioning in this world.  Therefore, he is truly the first object of our love.  Without knowing this, we undergo endless suffering.  When we realize this fact, all of our troubles cease to exist.  May the master always keep this awareness awake in your heart.  Then your life will be blessed.

December

When all things began, the Word already was.  The Word dwelt with God, and what God was, the Word was.  The Word, then was with God at the beginning, and through him all things came to be; no single thing was created without him.  All that came to be was alive with his life, and that life was the light of men.  The light shines on in the dark, and the darkness has never quenched it.

So the Word became flesh; he came to dwell among us, and we saw his glory, such glory as befits the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

The Gospel according to John
